Chase Mills – Mrs. Audrey E. Hurlbut, 94, of County Route 36, passed away early Wednesday morning, October 30, 2013 at the St. Regis Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since September 5, 2013.
Audrey was born October 19, 1919 in Ogdensburg, the daughter of the late Morris and Elizabeth Lydamore LaLone. She and her only brother, Lyle, attended a one room school house down the street from her home. When they were ready to go to high school, they were taken to Chase Mills to board the train to go to Norfolk, where she graduated from Norfolk High School graduating in 1935.
She attended Ogdensburg Business School for two years earning her business diploma. On April 6, 1938, she married Samuel E. Hurlbut in the parsonage of the Louisville Community Church, with her brother, Lyle and his future wife, Marion Forrester attending. Sam tragically predeceased her on October 28, 1985.
Audrey was a homemaker who dedicated her life to children and helping her husband with the business end of their farm. She was a member of the Louisville Community Church and later the New Testament Church.
She was also active the Louisville Grange, Home Bureau, and the Louisville Ladies Aide Society. She was an avid reader, especially mysteries and her Bible. She also enjoyed playing Scrabble, drawing and painting, and collecting stamps.
She is survived by her children, David and Joann Hurlbut of Louisville, Ronald and Linda Hurlbut of Louisville, Gerald and Donna Hurlbut of St. Cloud, Florida, Linda and Alan Thompson of Chase Mills, Brenda and Lenny Pelifan of Kennewick, WA and Brian and Cindee Hurlbut of Louisville; 23 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; 1 great, great grandchild; and was awaiting the birth of her 41st great grandchild.
She was predeceased by her son, Lloyd J. Hurlbut on December 18, 2000; and her brother, Lyle LaLone in June 2006.
Friends may call Saturday 12 to 2:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM with Pastor Don Curry, officiating. Burial will follow in Louisville Community Cemetery.
