Mrs. Sakakohe Millicent Anne Cook Pembleton, 63, of Akwesasne
Akwesasne – Mrs. Sakakohe Millicent Anne Cook Pembleton, 63, of 536 State Route 37, entered the Spirit World on Thursday morning, July 25, 2013 at Massena Memorial Hospital, where she had been admitted the previous day.
Sakakohe was born in Westchester, Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late William John Rasennes and Evelyn Mary Montour Cook. She graduated from Immaculate Heart Academy and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Nazareth College. She later graduated from St. Lawrence University with her Master’s Degree in Education.
On August 11, 1978, she married Raymond J. Pembleton at the Mohawk Nation Longhouse in Akwesasne.
Sakakohe worked for various companies throughout her life, beginning as a Central File Clerk with Bechtel Corporation, then as a Secretary with the University of Toronto. She later worked as an Office Manager with Experiential Systems Inc. and as a Researcher with the Community Council of Greater New York. Sakakohe was also an Office Manager for Akwesane Fuels and later, an Office Manager for the Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs.
She served as the Director for the Johnson O’Malley Program and later became the Administrator for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe. Sakakohe then became the Special Projects Coordinator for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne then went on to become the Director of Health for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, the position she retired from in 2012.
Sakakohe was an award-winning administrator for MCA in the health field. She was an active member of the Mohawk Nation Longhouse, as well as a Sundancer. In addition to her many jobs, she enjoyed making baskets, doing puzzles, flower gardening and watching them grow, traveling with her son, and reading. Her greatest enjoyment was the time she spent with her grandchildren, who had named her “Tota Honey."
She is survived by her husband, Raymond; her children, Rasennes and Pamela Pembleton of Akwesasne, Lisa Pembleton of Massena, and Shatereh Johnson of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Rakwirahes, Rarontiiostha, and Alyssa; her sister, Tekatsitsiakwa (Katsi) Cook Barreiro of Akwesasne; her brother, Thomas K. Cook of Akwesasne; her chosen daughter, Wahiahawi Barreiro, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Kawennanoron Elizabeth Pembleton on October 2, 2002 and her brother, Louis T. Cook on May 13, 2013.
Friends may call at the Akwesasne Homemakers beginning Saturday 2:00 PM until the time of the service. Funeral services will be held Monday 11:00 AM at Homemakers in Snye. Meal to follow at the Hogansburg American Legion. Cremation will follow the services.
