Norman Douglas Helbock, 81, of Titusville, FL. formerly of Sackets Harbor, N.Y. passed away October 22, 2013 at home with family at his bedside, after a courageous battle with a long illness under the care of Hospice.

Norm, as he was known to friends, or Doug, as he was known to family, was born September 2,1932 to John and Alice Yerdon Helbock in Redfield, N.Y.  He grew up in the Redfield, Town of Boylston, Sandy Creek area where his interest in aviation began.

After graduation from Sandy Creek Central School in 1949, he entered the United States Air Force, serving until 1953 as a radio communications operator, spending over 18 months in Alaska and achieving the rank of Airman First Class.

After his military service, Norm went to work at Western Electric in Syracuse, N.Y. until he began his career with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stationed at Watertown International Airport, located in Jefferson County near Watertown, N.Y. as a flight operations specialist/meteorologist, retiring after 31 years.

Upon retiring, he went to work for Weather Data Services as a meteorologist, reporting weather conditions to air traffic and the Weather Service, retiring in 2001. He also held various part-time jobs over the years when he had some spare time.

Norm married Violet M. Moose from Watertown ,N.Y. on January 27, 1953. They were married over 60 years.

For the first few years they lived in the Syracuse area until relocating to the Sackets Harbor area, where they lived for over 50 years until relocating to Titusville, FL. in 2009. Norm enjoyed fishing, woodworking, home projects, puttering in his shop, meeting people and chatting with people, loved listening to classic country music, and occasionally playing his guitar.

He also enjoyed auto racing, attending several races and watching them on television. He especially enjoyed going to the Oswego Speedway; he first went there in 1953 with Violet and then Labor Day weekends each year, camping with his American and many Canadian friends and family.

Norm was a life member and past Commander of the Sackets Harbor American Legion Post 1757, a life member and past Master with the Sackets Harbor Masonic Lodge, and served many years as a volunteer firefighter and was a past Fire Chief with the Sackets Harbor Volunteer Fire Department.

Norm is survived by his wife Violet; four children and their spouses, DonnaLee (Bob) Jarvis of Titusville, FL., Robert  (Nancy) Helbock of Stephens City, VA., David (Anne) Helbock of Sterling, VA., Lynne (Jim) Murray of Titusville, FL. and Dorothy (Ken) Kellar of Newark, N.Y. who was like another daughter; 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Norm is also survived by a brother, Donald (Sandy) Helbock of Mexico, N.Y. and a sister-in-law Madeline (Arthur) Miles of Gloversville, N.Y.; one uncle, Paul (Marion) Yerdon of Central Square, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides his parents, Norm was predeceased by an infant great granddaughter.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter, N.Y. at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, Sackets Harbor with military honors.

Visitation will be Friday, November 1, 2013 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. A Masonic service will be held at 7:00 PM Friday evening.
