Paul A. Thiebeau Jr., 76, of Clayton passed away suddenly at his home on Monday, October 28, 2013, with his wife “Mike” and daughter Amy by his side.
The funeral service will be held at 11 am Saturday at Concordia Lutheran Church in Watertown. Pastor Paul Luisi will officiate. A reception will follow at 1:00 pm at the Clayton Fire Hall, Graves Street, Clayton.
There will be no calling hours, and arrangements are with the Cummings Funeral Service, Inc. Clayton.
Paul was born in Black River on August 8, 1937, son of Paul A. and Grace McCrea Thiebeau Sr. He graduated from Clayton High School in 1955 and attended Clarkson University for one year on an ROTC hockey scholarship. He received his Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Alfred State University.
He married the love of his life, Barbara “Mike” J. MacKearnin on September 6, 1958 in Buffalo, NY.
For 42 years Paul was co-owner of Buffalo Crushed Stone, Inc. and was involved with the construction of most major roads, highways and bridges in New York state. He retired in 2000 when he and “Mike” returned to his beloved St. Lawrence River where they built their home and became involved in the Clayton community.
Paul was an active member of the Clayton Fire Department, current Director of Jefferson County Fire, Commissioner of the Town of Clayton Fire District, and Captain of the Fire Police and of both the Clayton Fire and Ice Boats. He was also actively involved with Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service (T.I.E.R.S.) and was currently deeply involved with its reorganization.
A member of the Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church of Watertown, he was also a loyal member of the Masons and Shriners, and the Royal Order of Jesters.
He will be remembered for his quick wit, his great sense of humor, and his “Git-R-Done” attitude. He was dedicated to living life to the fullest and thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing and being captain of his beloved antique Lyman boats, “Jackpot II” and “Wood B Good.”
Paul is survived by “Mike,” his beloved wife of 55 years; one son, Paul III (Trey) and his companion Barbara Bolognia of Old Forge; two daughters, Lori Catanzarita of New Hartford and Amy Koehler of Clayton. He also leaves three grandchildren, Joe Catanzarita of New Hartford, Chelsea Smith and husband Dalan of Virginia and Nick Koehler of Kenmore.
Also surviving are a brother, David, and his wife Julie of New Britain, Pa.; his mother-in-law Florence E. MacKearnin and brothers and sisters-in-law Pat and Gary Fitch of Olcott and Alice and Bob Burr of Clifton Park; many nieces and nephews and his Labrador hunting companion and buddy “Artie.”
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that donations in Paul’s name be made to the Clayton Fire Department or T.I.E.R.S., PO Box 524, both in Clayton, NY 13624, or to the Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church, 818 Arsenal St. Watertown, NY 13601.
