Ralph Millar, 87, of Massena

MASSENA – Mr. Ralph James Coolidge Millar, 87, of 14301 State Highway 37, passed away Tuesday evening, June 19, 2012 at Fletcher-Allen Medical Center, where he had been a patient for the past two weeks.

Ralph was born May 31, 1925 in Waddington, the son of the late Collie F. and Eva Campbell Millar.  He graduated from Massena High School.  At the age of 17 he enlisted in the US Navy serving during World War II aboard the Aircraft Carrier, USS Corrigedor (CVE 58) as a Radio Man Petty Officer.  After being discharged, attended and graduated from Albany College of Business and also attended Clarkson University.

On November 26, 1949, he married Corinne Weegar at the First United Methodist Church, Massena.  She predeceased him on May 7, 2002.

Ralph worked for a brief time at Alcoa, Massena before relocating to Washington, DC where he started a long career with the federal government.  He first worked for the Department of Defense and the Federal Bureau of Standards.  Ralph later joined the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation at its inception in Washington, DC, later transferring to Massena.  While in Massena, he served as a Financial Administrator, Director of Special Projects; retiring in 1984 as Director of Purchasing. 

He was a member of Massena Elks Lodge #1702 and the Earl J. Santimaw VFW Post #1143.  Ralph was also a 40 year member of the Massena Masonic Lodge #513.

Ralph is survived by his three children, Christopher Millar of Massena; Gregg Millar of Nevada City, California; and Allison Millar of Syracuse; and his grandson, Liam Millar-Naughton.

He was predeceased his brother, Charles Millar and his sister, Muriel Millar.

Friends may call Monday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where funeral services will be held Tuesday 11:00 AM with Rev. Sheila Nichols, officiating.  The members of the Masonic Lodge will hold a memorial ritual, Monday 7:30 PM.   Burial will be held privately in Pine Grove Cemetery, Massena.

Memorial contributions in Ralph’s memory may be made to the Massena Rescue Squad.
