Raymond Lawrence Sabre', 75

Raymond Lawrence Sabre' passed away Thursday morning, July 25, at his home surrounded by his family. Ray had been terminally ill and under the care of Hospice of Jefferson County.

He was born January 28, 1938 in Parishville, NY, son of the late Lawrence and Sadie Sabre’.

Mr. Sabre’ had worked for the US Postal Service for more than 35 years, retiring in 1997.  He had been postmaster in Calcium, NY; Russell, NY; and for his last 18 years of service, Dexter, NY.

Ray was a talented musician, playing the guitar and singing.  He was heavily involved in many local fiddle and bluegrass associations over the years including the Black River Fiddlers, Thousand Islands Bluegrass Preservation Society, and was one of the founding members of the Liberty Fiddlers. He played in many bands throughout the years; but his favorite genre was classic country. Ray founded the Lloyd Switzer Memorial Scholarship fund, now administered by the Thousand Islands Bluegrass Preservation Society in an effort to assist young musicians in following their dreams. To date forty students have received the scholarship.

In addition to music, Ray enjoyed watching football, baseball, and NASCAR.

He was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Brownville, NY.

Ray’s greatest love was spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.  He and his wife, Margaret Anne (Ashley), celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this year, and together had five children: Raymond Sabre’ and wife April of Watertown; daughter Robin and husband Louis Oelschlager of Edwards, NY; daughter Rene and husband Robert Mauchin of Dexter; daughter Roxanne and husband Steven Aikey of Dexter; and daughter Michelle (Sabre’) Farrell and fiancée Kevin Carpenter of Dexter.  They have 8 grandchildren ranging in ages from nine to twenty nine, and one great grandchild, age two.

He is survived by a brother, Jerry Sabre’ and wife Cathy of North Carolina; sister Patricia Roscoe and husband Robert of Florida; sister Joanne Benware and husband Arthur of Evans Mills; half sister Wendy Hummell of Kingston, NY.  He is predeceased by a brother Tommy, and his parents.  “Uncle Ray” had many adoring nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Ray’s name to the Thousand Islands Bluegrass Preservation Society Scholarship Fund.  Send donations to TI Bluegrass PS, Attn: Scholarship Fund, PO Box 175 LaFargeville, NY, 13656.

A private graveside service will be held at the family’s convenience.  Arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home, Dexter.
