Robert “Bud” Lang, 87, of West Carthage
West Carthage - Robert “Bud” Lang, 87, of 10 Rulison Street, passed away Monday morning, March 17, 2014, at the Country Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he had been a patient for a short time.
Bud was born in Portland, Maine on July 26, 1926 to the late Robert and Ethel Kenison Lang. He attended Wellesley High in Wellesley, Massachusetts until he was 17 and enlisted into the Navy after the beginning of World War II.
He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946 on the USS Yazoo and the USS St. John Ireland. As a gunner during World War II he received the World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Medal and 2-stars. He also trained under Jack Dempsey on the Navy boxing team where he was undefeated and Navy Heavyweight Champion.
Upon returning to Massachusetts after the Navy he owned and operated his own auto repair shop in Ashland, where he also worked for the Ashland police department. He then moved his family to Chaumont, New York, where he operated a family farm. His first marriage to Lois Lang ended in a divorce, at which time he moved to West Carthage NY. While in Carthage he worked at the Chevrolet garage and Riverside Car Wash.
In 1981 he married his true love Marilyn “Peanut” Burto in front of their family and friends. Bud enjoyed golfing as a member of Carlowden Country Club, riding his motorcycle, working on his cars, hunting and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Everyone enjoyed listening to the amazing stories of his life and time in the Navy.
He is survived by his wife Peanut; son Robert Jr and Sharon; two daughters, Judy Wiles and Joe, Carol and Charles Mount; six stepsons, Tim and Janet Burto, Tom Burto, Terry and Karen Burto, Kevin and Iris Burto, Kent and Johnna Burto and Jeff Burto; one stepdaughter, Darcy and John Delair; 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Bud was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Nancy Cheal; a sister, Olive Bosselman.
Calling hours will be held Saturday March 22nd from 11 am till 2 pm at Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with a funeral service to follow in the Chapel at 2 pm. A spring graveside service with military honors will be held in Fairview Cemetery at a time and date to be determined.
