Robert C. Place, 91, of West Carthage

Robert C. Place, 91, of Dalton Estates, West Carthage, passed away March 6th at the residence of Hospice of Jefferson County at the Ellis Farm, Watertown.

Robert was born August 16, 1921 in Arkville, New York, son of Ray and Edith Joslin Place. He graduated from Downsville High School.

He married Jeanne Stalker, daughter of O.C. Stalker and Anna Lord Stalker on April 5, 1942 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Downsville at a service performed by Father Herman Smith.

A World War II veteran, Robert received three battle stars while serving with the Army Air Corp. He was stationed in England as a radio operator, flying gas and ammunition supplies into France and Germany. Following the war, Robert was stationed in Casablanca, assigned to the Air Transport Command, bringing troops back to the United States, flying down to Dakar, Africa and over to Natal, Brazil. He was discharged January 16, 1946 at Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts.

Mr. Place and his wife came to Carthage in 1946, working with his father-in-law, O.C. Stalker, who was President of the family business, Braman Manufacturing Co. Inc. At the time, Braman's was one of the largest producers of hardwood brush blocks and handles, which were then sold to companies to make industrial and household brooms and paint brushes. The company also produced map rollers and moldings for Rand McNally Map. Co. and the U.S. Department of Interior. Following the death of Mr. Stalker in 1970, Robert became President of Braman's, while Jeanne served as Vice President. The company was eventually sold to All American Brush Co. Inc., Newark, New Jersey, and Robert managed the business until his retirement in 1986, when the couple would then spend winters in Lake Placid, Florida.

While in Carthage, Mr. Place helped shape his community, serving on committees that determined the current locations of the Carthage Central School campus and Carthage Area Hospital.

Mr. Place was a licensed funeral director, graduating from Simmons School of Embalming in Syracuse, working with his father at the Ray Place Funeral Director and Ambulance Service in Downsville, NY. He was also a licensed pilot and enjoyed flying. Mr. Place enjoyed softball and baseball, and in June 1939 played in the game that opened the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.

Robert also enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, golfing, local history and genealogy. He had been a member of Carlowden Country Club, Carthage Rotary Club, Carthage F & AM Lodge and Fairview Cemetery Assoc. He was on the advisory board of Lewis County Trust Co. and its successors, St. Lawrence and Community Banks. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and served on the vestry. Mr. Place was a life member of both the Carthage American Legion Post #789 and Carthage Elks Lodge #1762.

Robert is survived by his wife, three daughters; Roberta (Mrs. Arnett) Church, Pamela Cole and Paula (Mrs. Dale) DeLong as well as five grandchildren, five great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Dorothy, brothers Gerald and Ray, and son-in-law Donn H. Cole.
