Robert Stuart Macy, 85, of Adams, New York passed away February 5, 2014 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Syracuse, New York.
He was born August 8, 1928 in Watertown, New York, the son of Frank Joseph Macy and Hazel Aileen Stuart Macy. In 1932, the family moved to Adams Center where, in 1945, he graduated from Adams Center Central School. He attended Syracuse University before serving his country.
Robert was employed as an on air announcer “Mad Dog Macy” at WATN and later as a sales and division manager at Sears, Roebuck and Co. retiring in 1985. He served in the U. S. Army and was stationed on Okinawa during the Korean Conflict.
Robert was a committed lifelong volunteer. Shortly after graduation from high school, he volunteered for a program whereby horses were exported to northern Europe to replace equine populations decimated by military actions. His travels included to trips to Poland. After his retirement, he served as a tour guide for the Jefferson County Historical Society.
A long time educational instructor, Robert received the Loretta Landauer Memorial Humanitarian Award from the Red Cross. He thoroughly enjoyed his time spent as a life guard and swim instructor for the YMCA’s Arthritic Aquafit Program and his service to that agency was honored by the United Way. He was a CPR instructor and in that capacity was appointed to a faculty position at Jefferson County Community College.
He had a tremendous love of gardening that was passed down from his parents, and also shared by his wife. He enjoyed working on and researching his historic stone home of 55 years in Stone Mills, New York.
Robert is survived by the love of his life, Carolyn J. Harter Macy, his wife of 65 years; his children, Joanne Downey. Jon Macy (Sandra), and Michelle Macy; grandchildren Deanna Downey, Justin Macy and Logan Macy; great-granddaughter Mya Sandoval; great-great granddaughter Roselle Sandoval; his sister, Catherine Grieve; sister-in-law Pat Macy; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Frank H. Macy.
There will be no funeral service. Calling hours will be Sunday, February 9 from 4:00pm - 6:00pm at the Reed & Benoit Funeral Home, Watertown.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in his name to the Watertown YMCA (c/o Steve Rowell) 119 Washington Street, Watertown NY 13601 or the charity of one’s choice.
