Ronald H. Spencer, 66, of Carthage


Carthage - Ronald H. Spencer, 66, 823 Beaver Lane, died Thursday afternoon at his home while under the care of his family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Born in Carthage on November 1, 1946, the son of Harold C. & Beatrice Bishop Spencer, he graduated from Carthage Central High School in 1965. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from SUNY College of Technology and a Master’s Degree from Oswego State University.

He served in the United States Navy Seebees in Rhode Island from August 1965 until being honorably discharged in May of 1973. He served 42 months in Vietnam with different units.

He married Adele E. Marks on October 25, 1969. She died on March 20, 2002. He married Linda Smith on August 5, 2006.

Mr. Spencer retired in 2002 after 30 years as an automotive teacher at the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES.  He also taught night courses for the Canton College of Technology on Fort Drum for 10 years.

He was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers, the Watertown American Legion Post # 61, the Carthage VFW Post # 7227 and the Black River Valley Fiddlers. He received a heart transplant in 2002. He loved hunting, fishing and traveling.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons and a daughter in law, Mark & Tracy Spencer, Carthage, Timothy Spencer, Great Bend and his grandson, Mason Spencer.  Also surviving are three step sons and their wives, Scott & Tara Ebersol, Aaron & Courtney Ebersol, Jason & Julie Ebersol; five step-grandchildren, Allison, Derek, Emily, Calvin and Owen; three brothers, Clifford “Cubby” and his wife, Trudy Spencer, Deferiet, Richard Spencer, Carthage and John Spencer, Elmira; four sisters and their husbands, Carol & Ron Workman, Carthage, Catherine & Rodney Bent, Maryland, Shirley & Terry Cook, Great Bend and Sheila & Mark Trip, California.

He is predeceased by his parents; three sisters, Mary Taylor, Philaman Harris, Jane Iona Spencer; three brothers, Burton “Butch” Spencer, Robert Spencer and Carlos Spencer.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 16 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St., Carthage, with the Rev. George F. Maroun officiating.  Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery, Great Bend.

Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
