Ronald Scott, 76, of Canton

Canton  -- On a beautiful spring morning, May 3rd 2013, Ronald Scott, Beloved Husband, Brother, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Confidant and Friend to many, passed away peacefully into eternity.

Ron fell victim to cancer and left this earth as he lived, with grace and dignity. He joins his daughter Kelly and his parents Howard & Agnes in God’s presence.

He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-five years, JoAnne; his brother and sister in law, Bob & Mary; two sons & daughters in law, Rick & Robin, David & Lainey; grandchildren Richard, Amanda, Cory, Kyle, Tarryn, Wade, Taylor, Elizabeth, Samuel and Nicholas; and great-grandchildren Analise, Miley and Judah.

Ron was born in Ogdensburg, NY on May 17th, 1936, and spent most of his life in Canton. He loved his town and his Country and over the years served the community in many capacities, as a Deputy Mayor of Canton, A life member of the Stillwater Club, President of the Evergreen Cemetery, President and Deputy District Governor of the Lions Club, Trustee of the First Presbyterian Church of Canton, and on various boards and committees dedicated to the betterment of the north country. Ron served in the Army Reserves 314th MP corps in the late 50’s.

Over the years Ron enjoyed photography, horseback riding, motorcycling, hunting, snowmobiling and cross country skiing, and hobby cars including an MGB he owned for over 20 years. More recently Ron and JoAnne could be found driving around with the top down on a Jeep Wrangler sharing the exclusive wave. He was a ham radio operator, and craftsman. Ron fulfilled a lifelong desire at age 65 when he earned his Private Pilot license, shortly thereafter he purchased a Cessna 150 that he flew with joy until 2012.

Ron graduated from Canton Schools in 1954 and graduated from Clarkson University in 1958 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Ron & JoAnne married just after graduation and moved to Lockport, NY where Ron worked on the Niagara Power Project. Two years away from Canton was all he could take, and the young family came back to Canton.

Ron sold cars for his father in law, Emerson Bartman. One fortuitous sale of a car to the personnel director at Diamond International led him to a position utilizing his engineering at the paper company. He remained there until he took a position as Director of Physical Plant for Potsdam State University.

He remained at Potsdam State until his first “retirement” in 1991 after 25 years of service. Ron acted as a consultant on various projects until he came out of retirement to serve as Facilities Director at Canton Potsdam Hospital, where he remained until 2010.

Ron lived a life that others can only strive to emulate. His work ethic and drive are unparalleled and his legacy lives in the various outlets and ambitious hobbies he chose to dedicate his time to.  Humble and devoted his success was primarily shared by others as he preferred to fade into the background and watch his work unfold.

Perhaps the most dedicated of all was that of the role of husband in a marriage that cuts a template for all relationships. To be privy to his thoughts and advice was beyond a blessing. We will hear his voice, missing his sharp wit in conversations, and see his footprints all over for decades to come. As we continue down the road he paved for us we will look for his strength and confidence, perfect timing and immaculate image in everything we do.

Calling hours are Tuesday the 7th from 4 PM to 8 PM at Lawrence Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Canton at 10 AM on Wednesday the 8th, followed by a reception at the Canton Fire Department.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Cancer Treatment Center at Canton Potsdam Hospital or the Canton Fire Department.
