Ruth S. Schell, 89

Ruth S. Schell passed away Friday April 27, 2012 at the Country Manor Nursing Home, Carthage, where she had been a patient since January. Born on April 27, 1923 in Champion, N.Y. to the late Verne and Maud(Freeman)Staring.

In 1939 she attended the World's Fair as a Sheffield Farms Milkmaid contestant. After completion of school in Champion she became the first female milk tester working for DHIA. Ruth married Ivan W. Schell Sept. 13, 1944. They lived the Schell family farm in Theresa until they purchased a farm on the Middle Rd. in Rutland. While raising her family she worked a short time baking for Hardy's Tearoom and Partridge Berry Inn.

After her children had grown Ruth and Ivan converted part of their home into Schellcrest Bakery where they became well known for donuts, breads and wedding cakes. After retirement they lived a short time in New Jersey before settling in Jarratt, Va. where they enjoy friends and family stopping by as they traveled to and from Florida.

After Ivan's death in 2003 she returned to the area and resided in Carthage, N.Y. Ruth was an avid baker and cook and loved feeding family and friends. Other hobbies included crocheting, knitting, and tatting. She was always active with the church helping with dinners, making baby layettes and even filling in as a lay minister.

Ruth is survived by daughter, Wanda Kelsey, Brodnax, Va., daughter and son in law Joy and Jack Kriesick Sr., son Lloyd Schell, Watertown, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Two sisters predeceased her, Lemoine Greene and Faye Thompson Martian.

Calling hours will be Sunday May 6th from 11am-2pm at Reed & Benoit Funeral Home with the funeral following at 2pm Lay Ministers, Linda Wiltse and Mary Louse Hunt of the Champion Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery, Town of Rutland.

Donation made be made in memory of Ruth to Rutland Congregational Church or Champion Methodist Church.
