CARTHAGE- RuthAnn (Hughes) Burton, Born in Syracuse, New York on August 6, 1922, RuthAnn (Hughes) Burton was the daughter of William J. and Katherine (Sharkey) Hughes. She graduated from St. Anthony of Padua High School in 1940.

Ruth attended Alfred University where she majored in Ceramic Art. She was a member of Theta Theta Chi sorority and the Ceramic Guild.

A talented artist, Ruth received an award for artwork relating to World War II. Her piece was exhibited in New York City. She later aided the war effort inspecting 50 caliber machine gun parts in Syracuse.

While attending Alfred University, she met and then married Robert H. Burton who died in 2007. They are survived by three children: Robert (Melinda), Thomas (Lauren), and Jean (Lawrence). Ruth also leaves behind a grandson (Charles), three granddaughters (Sydney, Megan, Emily), and many nieces, nephews, and their families.

A top speed skater as a teenager, Ruth had a lifelong passion for sports, including swimming and golf. She enjoyed her late afternoon swims at camp, reading, and following Syracuse and Siena basketball.

Both friendships and family were important to Ruth. Her snappy comments always brought smiles and laughter. To all, she was a true friend who will be remembered fondly and greatly missed.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, July 8, 2014 from 9:00 – 10:30 at the Lundy Funeral Home located at – 500 State St., Carthage, NY 13619.

A Funeral Mass will follow immediately at St. James Catholic Church, Carthage. Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 11:30 in the St. Francis Cemetery in Harrisville.
