Sally F. (Jean) Helmerci, 87, of Watertown

Sally F. (Jean) Helmerci, 87, of 384 Broadway Avenue West, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the Samaritan Medical Center.

Mrs. Helmerci was born January 17, 1925 in Watertown, a daughter of James Grant and Alma Williams Fisk. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1941 at the age of sixteen as an Honor Society member and Salutatorian of her class. Two years later she graduated from the Watertown School of Commerce.

On October 20, 1949 she married John C. Helmerci at Asbury Methodist Church. Mrs. Helmerci began her employment in 1942 with New York State Dept of Transportation. She held several positions including Assistant Officer for Region 7 and Principal Account Clerk. She retired in April of 1987 after forty four years of service.

Mrs. Helmerci served on the board of directors for the YWCA, was treasurer for the NYS Civil Service Employees Federal Credit Union, secretary and treasurer for the American Legion Auxiliary and member of the Jefferson County Historical Society.

She volunteered for the Samaritan Medical Center Auxiliary, where she worked in the hospital gift shop. She was a member of the Watertown Golf Club, bowled in the Women’s City League and in the Co-Ed League. While a member of the American Legion she assisted with the holiday distribution of cookies and Christmas gifts at Whispering Pines Adult Home.

Mrs. Helmerci enjoyed playing duplicate bridge three times a week, cross stitch, needle point, knitting for her family, crossword puzzles, reading a book a day and gardening in her vegetable and flower gardens.

Surviving besides her husband are; her son, Grant, Watertown, her daughter and son in law, Deborah and Raymond Fortman, Katy, TX, a brother, Robert Fisk, Belleville, FL., three grandchildren, Grant and Jared Helmerci and Corinne Donah, a great granddaughter, Leah Helmerci and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Richard, James and George Fisk and a sister, Betty Goodlander.

Calling hours will be Friday 5-8pm at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. The funeral service will be held Saturday May 5, 2012 at 11 am at the D.L. Calarco Funeral Home, Inc. with Reverend Arthur LaBaff officiating.. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Jefferson County, 1398 Gotham Street Road, Watertown, NY 13601. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery at a later date.
