Sherwood J. “Sherb” Potter, 84, of Lowville


LOWVILLE – Sherwood J. “Sherb” Potter, of Jefferson Street, died Tuesday morning, April 22, 2014 at Lewis County General Hospital.

A funeral Mass will be said at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Lowville with Rev. Christopher Carrara, Pastor, officiating.  A luncheon will immediately follow the funeral Mass in the church fellowship hall.  A graveside service will be held in Black River Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.  Calling hours will be from 6 – 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Iseneker Funeral Home, Lowville.  Contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, 5457 Shady Ave., Lowville, NY  13367

He is survived by his wife of over 42 years, Patricia; his children and their spouses, Jacqueline Boomer of Owego, NY; Cheryl Fuller and her husband, Landis of Evans Mills, NY; Kevin Potter and his wife, Kim of McDade, TX; Troy Potter and his wife, Suzanne of Alexandria, VA; three step-sons and their wives, Timothy Waite of Honolulu, HI; Jeffrey Waite and his wife Jocelyn of Bainbridge Island, WA; Scott Waite and his wife, Lanette of Clifton, VA; a daughter-in-law, Anne Potter of Longmont, CO; seven grandchildren, ten step-grandsons, and five great-grandchildren.   Mr. Potter was predeceased by a son, James Potter, who died July 18, 1995 at the age of 43; and by a brother, Donald Potter.

Sherb was born on December 3, 1929 in Alexandria Bay, NY, a son of the late Handley and Eliza Caryl Potter.  He graduated from Black River High School in 1947.  In January 1949, he married Margery Kanik in Black River.  The marriage later ended in divorce.  Sherb and his father owned and operated Stan’s Esso Service Station in Black River from 1960 until 1971.  He then went to work for Kraft Foods in Lowville in 1971 as a sanitary welder, and retired there in 1993.  On January 7, 1972, he married Patricia Pete Waite at Lowville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Nay officiating.  Mr. Potter was a substitute bus driver for Lowville Central School from 1989 until 2008.

Sherb was Assistant Fire Chief for Black River Fire Department for many years.  He played Border League basketball for many years, and was a high school baseball umpire for 15 years.  He coached youth programs in basketball, baseball, soccer and hockey in Lowville for several years.  Mr. Potter was a member of Lowville Elks Lodge 1605, a member of the Northern Cruisers of Lowville, and the Cedars Seniors Golf League.  Mr. Potter worked in Cub and Boy Scout Programs for over 25 years.

Sherb enjoyed golfing, traveling and woodworking.
