Sylvia Doris Rubenstein, 92, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at the Spicer Adult Home, while under their care and that of Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley.
Sylvia was born May 14, 1921 in Toronto, Canada; she was the daughter of Samuel and Annie (Samuels) Krieger. In the early 1940’s she left Toronto to attend nursing school at the Barnert Memorial Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey. She married her dear husband, Julius Rubenstein, CPA in 1944. Julius passed away in October 1992.
She leaves behind her sons and daughter-in-laws, Steven and Lee of Paramus, NJ; Jay and Gena (Fischer) of Harrington Park, NJ and her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Paul Pederson of Hermon, NY. Sylvia also leaves behind her grandchildren Beth and Kate Rubenstein, Teitjen and Brandon Fischer and many nieces and nephews.
Sylvia left nursing school in the mid 1940’s to raise her family but returned to private duty in the mid 1960’s and eventually headed the outpatient department at the Barnert Memorial Hospital. Sylvia was part owner of the Elmwood Florist where she worked after retiring from nursing. She will be fondly remembered by many who knew her, particularly, for her strong interest in politics. Her wish was to be remembered as a “good Democrat”.

Her family would like to thank Hospice and her caregivers, Linda and Lorene, for their kindness and making her days as comfortable as possible.
