Wesley E. Cleveland, 71 of Hermon

Wesley E. Cleveland, age 71, of Hermon, passed away on Friday, May 11, 2012 at home under the care of his loving family and Hospice.

 

Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Monday, May 14, 2012 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. His funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Revs. Charles Colton and Paul Case of the Russell Pilgrim Holiness Church officiating. Burial will be in the Hermon Cemetery followed by a reception held at the Hermon Fire Hall.

 

Wesley was born on February 6, 1941 in Pitcairn. He was the son of the late Clarence J. and Lavisa R. (LaVancha) Cleveland. He attended school in Harrisville and received his G.E.D. from the United States Army.

 

Mr. Cleveland proudly served in the Army from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1964. He had received the Sharpshooter Rifle (M1) badge.

Wesley married Esther Anne Fifield on September 16, 1961. The couple had lived in Russell before moving to the Hermon area where they have spent the last 47 years.

 

Mr. Cleveland worked for St. Joe Mineral Corp. for 23 years. He worked in the Edwards and Balmat mines before doing some electrical work and retiring as a hoist operator. He and his sons also cut and sold firewood for many years until 2005.

 

His survivors include his wife, Esther; two sons and their wives, Brian and Sheila Cleveland of Bigelow, Clarence "Butch" and Kelly Cleveland of Hermon; three daughters, Mrs. Matt (Janet) Sims of Macedon, Mrs. Greg (Jeanette) Withrow of Morrisonville, and Valerie Cleveland of Hermon. He is also survived by two brothers, James and Lawrence; three sisters, Arlene Shaw, Leta Mantle and Carol Ryan; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

 

He is predeceased by three brothers, Harold, Kenneth, and Dale; and three sisters, Irene Layboult, Joyce Cleveland, and Leta Cleveland.

Donations in memory of Wesley may be made to the Russell Pilgrim Holiness Church, the Hermon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, or to Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
