Massena - William F. Brainard, 92, of Curtis Street passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon December 8, 2013 at his home, surrounded by his family.

A mass of Christian burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 12, 2013 at St. Mary’s Church with Rev. Scott D. Fobare officiating, with full military honors at Calvary Cemetery Chapel.

Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in the spring.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, December 11, 2013 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Massena.

William is survived by Darlene, his wife of 66 years; his children, William F. Jr. (Pam) of Portsmouth, VA, John T. (Dianne) Brainard of Union City, PA, Mary Jane (Kim) Lauzon of Indianapolis, IN, Anne Marie (Wayne) Fleury of Massena, NY, Robert J. (Jean) Brainard, Brasher Falls, NY, Richard G. Brainard, Massena, NY, Daniel E (Sharon) Brainard Portsmouth, VA, Cathy (Jerry) Anderson of Raleigh, NC, Crystal (John) Williams and Kevin J. Brainard, both of Norfolk, NY.

He is also survived by a sister, Elma LaForce of Massena; 21 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

William was predeceased by a son, Timothy; a granddaughter, Melissa Brainard; a grandson, Sean P. Brainard; a brother, John G. Brainard; two sisters, Beulah Donnelly and Evelyn White.

William “Buz” Brainard was born on October 1, 1921 to the late William B. and Sarah (Carney) Brainard. He attended Massena high school and was drafted into the Unites States Army Air Force during World War II. Buz served his country proudly and was honorably discharged.

He was married shortly after returning home to Darlene Prashaw on June, 21 1947 at St. Mary’s Church in Waddington, NY with Rev. Edward Pierce presiding.

William was a maintenance and Zamboni driver at the Massena Arena when he retired in 1983.

Buz was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed spending time with his family in the Adirondacks and at Lake Eaton, camping.
