William M. Forrest “Bud”, 91, of Wellesley IslandWilliam M. Forrest “Bud”, 91, of Syracuse and Wellesley Island, New York died in his sleep peacefully on February 11, 2013 at the Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown, New York. Born March, 21, 1921 in Flandreau, South Dakota, he graduated from Greene High School, Columbia University USN Officer School and after the war, the University of Michigan with an Engineering degree in 1947. In WW II he served with the Sea Bees in the Aleutians and then as an officer in the United States submarine service in the South Pacific. In 1945 he married his childhood sweetheart, Eleanor Elizabeth Boeltz from Greene, New York. Bud was a devoted husband of 63 years to Eleanor who died in 2008 and was the father of son, James T. Forrest (Jeanette Denby); a daughter, Jo Ann F. Schwalm; three grandsons, Matson Forrest Schwalm(Samantha), Dugan Hardy Schwalm, J. Bradford Schwalm(Caroline); four great grandchildren, Forrest, Addison, George, and Susan; a sister, Mary Van Alsten; and eleven nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Thomas Hardy Schwalm; and two sisters, Rosella Miller and Marjorie Forrest. Bud was a prominent self-employed consulting engineer who designed many of the commercial buildings in Syracuse during his career. He was a talented woodworker and carver who also loved golf, hunting, and fishing. He was a member of Onondaga Country Club, the Cavaliers, and the Thousand Islands Country Club. In later life, his passion was restoring and building new George Boldt design flagpoles that graced the banks of the St. Lawrence River at the turn of the 20th Century. A memorial service will be held next summer in the Thousand Islands. Contributions may be made to the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY, River Hospital, or Samaritan Keep Home.
