Cape Vincent, the unpretentious, yet artistically happening river town is again offering two contest events that prove there is no place like the Cape:
June 1-July 12 ~ “Les Belles Fleurs” Garden Competition begins June 1st:
The Cape Vincent Improvement League’s Garden Club is again sponsoring “Les Belles Fleurs” garden competition initiated with the support of the late Dr. William Grant . This is a contest for village residents and businesses to showcase the beautiful gardens located within the village limits. This year prizes of $100 each will be awarded to the ten most beautiful flower gardens in the village. Window boxes and other container gardens qualify. All gardens must be visible from the street. Judging will be the week of July 5th - 10th and winners will be announced at the Annual French Festival on Saturday, July 11th . For more information contact Sally Hirschey at 654-5036.
June 1-August 15 ~ “Focus on Cape Vincent” Amateur Photo Contest begins June 1st and continues until August 15th.
The subjects of the photographs must be of the Cape Vincent town and village area. They may include sunsets, scenery, people and events. Any season of the year is acceptable. The photos are added to the photo library of the Chamber of Commerce and are used to promote the area in press publications. No pet photos please. Glazing Handmade Ceramic Beads with Mary Harding – Thursday, June 4th from 6:00-8:00 pm. Ceramic beads and other large focal pieces are all the rage in jewelry trends today. Mary’s beads were selected by the editors of Beadwork for the Beads 2009 Ultimate Beader’s Resource! She really knows her stuff – students will learn about the ceramic glazing process and special considerations regarding working with beads. Students will glaze a selection of beads which Mary will then take home to fire for them. Ages 16 and up. Drawing with Jian Fen Wells – Saturday June 6th from 1:00-3:00pm. Ages 13 and up. Drawing is the foundation upon which all other fine arts skills are built. Originally from Beijing, Jian Fen is an accomplished artist in her home country and now wishes to share her skills in teaching with her new neighbors in the North Country. Large focal elements are beautiful and compelling but it can be intimidating trying to create a balanced design using them. Mary will share tips and techniques for stringing and finishing to create a balanced, pleasing composition that you will be thrilled to wear. Seed Bead Weaving – Supple Cuff Bracelet with Virginia Burnett – Saturday – June 13th from 10:00am – 1:00pm. Off loom seed bead work is so beautiful – supple, shimmering and versatile – but working with those teeneency beads can be intimidating. Students in this class will learn 3 simple basic stitches for creating a strip of shimmering beadwork - ladder stitch, herringbone stitch and a decorative modification to herringbone stitch. This will be an excellent introductory class for those who are new to bead work or a great way to expand your beading skill set. Ages 17 and up. Class Fee $35.00, Materials fee $10.00. The Summer Visual Arts Camp will introduce students to a variety of visual arts media--including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and bookmaking. Readers’ Theatre – Oedipus Rex - Monday, June 22nd from 7:00-9:00pm. – This summer the SLC Arts Council is sponsoring an informal readers’ theatre group for ages 14 and up. This is an opportunity for community members to enjoy the literature of Drama without staging a full production. Reading parts will be randomly assigned according to the size of the group, audience members are welcome.
