The Coolest Place on Earth

If Disneyland is the happiest place on earth, The Coolest Place on Earth has to be the Roxbury Motel.

I recently spent three relaxing nights at the hip, yet classy Roxbury Motel in Roxbury New York.  Wow.  I’m in love!  This award winning small resort is a masterpiece of concept and design. The owners Greg and Joe were inspired by the heyday of motor hotels – (hence the new word motel) and the golden age of television sitcoms and films of the sixties and seventies.

Each room or suite has a theme relating to a specific television program, film or features an original take on retro décor and feeling of mid to late 20th Century.

Samantha’s Cloud is inspired by the hugely popular sitcom “Bewitched” – A ceiling of clouds and the gorgeous sky blue walls create a calming space, where you might just wake up and see Endora and Samantha looking down on you as they discuss Darren’s last dilemma.

Fred’s Lair, inspired by Bedrock’s number one family, is a whimsical romp, with delicious details that include a dinosaur trophy head on the wall, faux bison fur lamps and walls that resemble a stone house.

It’s impossible to not “come on and get happy” in The Partridge Nest, with bright colors that resemble the kitschy bus that Keith, Danny and the gang once rode to their gigs.

For an elegant experience, the fabulous Golightly-a-Go-Go room, which pays homage to one of the most romantic movies of all time, "Breakfast at Tiffany’s," is an experience like no other.  A beautifully framed photo of the iconic and inimitable Audrey Hepburn in a shot from the movie looks down on you.  The details here are impeccable: the authentic tiffany blue walls, the dainty bed pillow adorned with a tiffany necklace replica and the piece de resistance, the bathroom bowl sink with an inlayed photograph of Fifth Avenue. Bravo!

For those looking to spend a bit more the suites offer an experience all their own.  The Shagadellic – which is where I want to stay next time – is so groovy it’s sublime.

George’s Spacepad, which was inspired by "The Jetsons" is a futuristic funhouse that features a bathtub (imported from Italy) and sink that light up from within and custom made, one of a kind Tomorrowland-like fold out couches.

But surely the most famous room is Genie’s Bottle

Barbara Eden would feel right at home here in this pink palace of plush pillows and curved walls.  You will be in another world if you stay here, one you won’t soon forget.

Not only is the design of the Roxbury amazing, so is the service.  The beds are so comfortable that I was finding it difficult to get up in the morning.  There are over 300 movies in the DVD collection which you can check out for free and there is a quaint yet luxurious spa with a fireplace where you can hot tub with a view of a meadow and brook.  Everything smells nice at the Roxbury: The sheets, the towels, the pillows, the robes – it’s amazing.  I was obsessed with making my laundry and linen smelling better after I got home from the Roxbury, but alas I wasn’t able to duplicate the smashing scents that surrounded me while I was there.

Also love the great reading lights next to the bed.  They are stylish and functional with a great dimmer feature.  The color coordinated clothes storage bins in the closets are a nice touch.  The attention to detail is astonishing.!

The Roxbury Motel is about four hours from Watertown in Delaware County in the Western Catskills and is located in a tiny town (Roxbury) that is on the national register.  A great place to stay while skiing, peep leafing in the fall, and of course during the gorgeous cool mountain summers.  Check out their site and make a reservation.  I will see you at the Shagadelic!
