You can kick off your weekend early with the outdoor concerts in Norwood on the village green.

Speaking of Concerts, don’t forget to check out – the traditional Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Thompson Park Extravaganza!

On Thursday, July 2, 2009, the SSO’s newly appointed Principal Pops Conductor Ron Spigelman will lead the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra in a free Independence Day concert at Thompson Park in Watertown.

Festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m., as Operation Yellow Ribbon honors the servicemen and women in a patriotic pre-show concert featuring the 10th Mountain Division Band.

The Symphony will take the stage at 8:00 p.m. and perform a program of familiar American melodies and patriotic favorites by John Williams, George Gershwin, John Philip Sousa and more. The Fort Drum Color Guard will begin with a presentation of colors, while the SSO plays the National Anthem. A grand fireworks display will follow the concert finale of Tchaikovsky’s famous 1812 Overture and the patriotic favorite, Stars and Stripes Forever.

In the event of inclement weather, this concert will be held on July 6 at 8:00 p.m. If a rain location is needed on July 6, the concert will take place at Watertown High School.

FAVORTIE ART PICK OF THE WEEKEND

Breakwater  Art Gallery  at 379  Club St  in Cape Vincent opens it’s 2009 summer activities with  a reception  for the “Mixed Invitational  Show” on Friday June 26  from 5pm to 8 pm . The show participants were selected by Larry Barone , who owns The Gallery Fine Art in Sackets Harbor, Gregg Lago owner of  The Winged Bull Art Gallery in Clayton and Rollin Hanson Director of Breakwater Art Gallery in Cape Vincent .

The Purpose of the show is to combine the 3 artistic communities where the galleries are located .  The selections were made on the basis of skill and perhaps a unique presentation of  ideas .Artists were selected for more original approaches  to subject.  There will be very few if any of lighthouses or Herons on the rock.

The subjects mentioned  have been worn out  to the point of  cliche. These subjects are at best good for souvenirs but not art. Sentimental subjects were avoided and replaced with less pretty pictures and sculptures that we hope are thought provoking and intense   . Still we think the show is exciting in its original approaches to landscape attitude or philosophy The work is excellent, very compelling and perhaps a little risky. We hope the show will find a home in another year at one of the other towns mentioned.
