At a large, tasteful townhouse, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of Farce. Gathering for their tenth wedding anniversary, the host lies bleeding in the other room and his wife is nowhere in sight. His lawyer, Ken and wife Chris must get "the story" straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity.

Members of the Little Theatre recently participated in the week long International Theater Festival  What a great place for our local artists to be represented.

Here is a great little recap of their adventures by Little Theatre President, Sarah Hovey and the gradn dame of Watertown theater, Jane Jenkins.

“The Mont-Laurier Quebec week-long International Theater Festival was a great experience for three members of the Little Theatre of Watertown, New York.  Jane Bowman Jenkins’s performance of Lucy Stickler in “Margaret Faydle Comes to Town”, a monologue from the play “Murderers” by Jeffrey Hatcher was selected to compete at festival from among 70 troupes world-wide.

Mont-Laurier is a small town in French-speaking Quebec province  The whole town was decked out with the festival logo and everyone was generous and friendly. Claire Kibsey, our assigned “Godmother,” was wonderful – making dining reservations, translating, driving us where needed, entertaining us at her lakeside home, and informing us of the protocol.  Meal and hotel accommodations were paid for by the festival. Our troupe was teamed with China and Spain for our meals.  They spoke English very well and were fun and friendly.

At the opening ceremonies we were greeted by the festival organizer, the mayor, and a Quebec politico similar to a US Congressman.  Then each of the 24 troupes (from 20 different countries) gave a 2-minute introduction/advertisement for their show – very entertaining.    We brought along an American flag given to us by our Congressman and which had flown over the US capitol on August 10, 2009.  Flags from all countries were on display at the outdoor pavilion for the entire festival.

Festival organizers blocked off a section of street during the festival.  They set up tables, games, music, a bar, and a station where they sold food. We could go there anytime to relax, chat, listen to some great live music, or perform street acts.  Sarah Hovey performed as Fifi D. Clown making balloon animals and performing magic on Saturday.  On Tuesday Pete Hovey performed as “The Beautiful Lady” trying to get her hands on Charlie Chaplin played by Sarah.  Jane Jenkins, Sarah, and Pete also made appearances as the Statute of Liberty, Betsy Ross, and Uncle Sam respectively.

One of our duties was to give a presentation to local students on Friday.  Jane Jenkins as Lucy Stickler, and Sarah Hovey in clown did a demonstration on two types of comedy, verbal and physical, to a high school English class.  The students loved it and asked many questions of both Lucy and Fifi.

Sunday, September 13 was the big day.  Jane Jenkins was scheduled to perform twice that day to audiences of 100 people in the smallest of the three theaters used at festival.  Jane received standing ovations and many “Bravos!” The local arts newspaper, L’Echo de la Liévre wrote about her performance saying it was a “delicious comedy…very amusing” and that Jane’s performance was “exceptional.”   Jane says she felt like a celebrity from then on because everywhere she went people approached her with kudos.

Unlike some festivals, there were no rules on setup time and no adjudications.  There were eight awards ($400 each), seven by jury and one people’s choice.  Little Theatre did not win an award, but it was obvious from the audiences’ laughs and cheers that they thoroughly enjoyed the production.  It was impossible to attend all the shows, but of the ones we did see, some were unusual, most of them were excellent, and it was obvious that the winners took care to make sure an audience could understand what was going on without understanding the dialog.

We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in the festival - a first for the USA!  Thanks to Sherman Ward, AACT,  Joan Luther and TANYS for their encouragement and support.”
