Giacomo Puccini’s TOSCA
October 18, 2009 at 1 pm

“Tosca combines Puccini’s glorious musical inspiration with the melodramatic vitality of one of the great Hitchcock films,” says Met Music Director James Levine, who conducts this new production.

Three people—a famous opera singer, a free-thinking painter, and a sadistic chief of police—are caught in a net of love and politics. Karita Mattila sings the title role for the first time outside her native Finland.

October 18 ~ Annual Crop Walk, 2 pm, Fire Hall, The 16th Annual Cape Vincent CROP WALK will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2009, beginning at 2 PM at the Cape Vincent Fire Hall on NYS Rte 12.  The annual fall event, organized by the United Church, St. John’s Church and St. Vincent of Paul’s Church, extends from the Fire Hall to the Tibbett’s Point Lighthouse and back.  ~~ Water and refreshments will be available along the route. Transportation will also be offered to those persons who do not wish to walk the entire six miles but want to do their part in making a difference in the world. ~~ The CROP HUNGER WALKS are “Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty” – neighbors walking together to take a stand against world hunger. The program is part of a nationwide effort of the Church World Service, an organization founded in 1946 as the relief, development and refugee assistance ministry of 35 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican denominations in the United States.  In 2008, the CWS raised nearly $27 Million in its community appeals. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised locally each year are distributed to the Cape Vincent food pantries. ~~ In 2008, David Schneider continued with his record breaking 15th year as Cape Vincent’s top fundraiser which raised $3045.50 for the one-day event.  David is already hard at work to make 2009 another record year. (Since 1994, David has raised $20,566 in contributions!)  Although David is now residing in Watertown, David is back in the village collecting for Crop Walk on weekends. Those persons who have contributed to Crop Walk through David in the past can give their donations to his mother, Chris Schneider, for him in case they miss seeing David this year.  ~~ “If you want to travel fast, travel alone. If you want to travel far, travel together.” This African proverb defines the spirit of Crop Walk. Please join your friends and neighbors on the 18th of October and enjoy the scenery along the River and help raise money to fight world hunger both at home and abroad.  For more information, call Marilyn Peters, Cape Vincent CROP WALK Chairperson. At 315.654.4626.
