"Blast From The Past": Mill Creek Boat Races

Bruce Alcombrack and his buddies cooked up the idea of riding Mill Creek while having a brew at the old Boar's Head Inn in Sackets Harbor.

That was back in the 1970's.

The timing was perfect.

After the spring melt, the water was high and the river was fast.

As many as 30 boats would compete.

Canoes, homemade rafts and flat bottom rowboats worked the best.

This racing went on for six or seven years.

It got so popular, everybody came out to watch!

The guys would win prizes, but, in reality, it was all about bragging rights.
