Blast from the Past: Salmon Run Mall Opens

Tools

With all the pomp and circumstance of a royal wedding, dignitaries officially opened the Salmon Run Mall in Watertown on September 14th, 1986.

As you might expect, it was a really big deal.

On it's first day, the mall drew 12,000 shoppers.

Where the mall sits, just off Route I-81, had been a 100 acre dairy farm owned and operated by the Walton family. (Some people may remember enjoying an ice cream cone from the farm's ice cream stand.)

The mall was named for the feisty salmon that once brought anglers from all over to fish the Black River.

The one big box store that's been a constant from the beginning: Sears.  The rest have changed through the years.

Today, the mall is home to close to 85 businesses--everything from salons and shoes to fast food and entertainment.
