2014 Tony Award Nominations Announced

Some Big surprises this morning with the Tony nominations:

Have you seen the best musical nominations? Whoa!  They are most peculiar? Aladdin and Beautiful beat out Rocky. The Bridges of Madison County and Bullets over Broadway.  What is with Disney?  They always seem to have a lock on the best musical nomination no matter what movie musical redo they open with every season.   Rocky actually had mixed reviews, with the second act supposedly thrilling and the first act dulling.  Although Rocky did receive a total of four nominations, including one for its charismatic star, Andy Karl and for its amazing set design.

I am not surprised however, by The Glass Menagerie revival receiving seven nominations.  It was stunning and my favorite show from last season. MY REVIEW HERE Zachary Quinto, whose performance as Tom was praised by most critics and adored by audiences, was the only actor not nominated form the four person ensemble.  He faced fierce competition from the likes of Tony Shalub, Bryan Cranston, and multiple TONY winner Mark Rylance. Cherry Jones’, amazingly complex and instantly iconic performance as Amanda Wingfield should be a lock for best actress in a play, even though her competition is just as stiff including five time winner Audra McDonald and Oscar Winner Estelle Parsons.

Here is a link to all nominations.
