Well Rick and Beth are saying this rain is going to be with us through the 4th of July weekend, but it could change on Saturday. Here's hoping it changes before that! Especially when I'm hoping to be front and center when the Clayton fireworks go off Friday!
As a result of the rain, the Symphony in the Park performance with the Syracuse Symphony in Watertown's Thompson Park has been rescheduled to Monday, July 6.
Hopefully, no one will be camping out in the wet for the event wondering what happened!
On Friday, July 3rd, Clayton is hoping the weather will hold off for its fireworks on Calumet Island, scheduled for around dusk, so close to 10 PM probably.
On the 4th, Sackets Harbor will have its fireworks (probably more luck on this day, but weather is still iffy) at the Sackets Harbor Battlefield, again around dusk. If you want more information on this, call Gertrude Kerris at (315) 646-3548.
The Alexandria Bay fireworks over Boldt Castle will be on Sunday, July 5, depending on the weather. Best chance to see a show is probably this day.
If you're wondering when your area is having its fireworks display, be sure to visit your Chamber of Commerce's website or give them a call. Sometimes, even the town of village offices will have that information as well.
Parades, Picnics and Field Days
Independence Day is a time to honor those who defend our nation and who make America the unique and patriotic home it is. Norwood, Morristown and Massena are having celebrations on the fourth that include parades, BBQ's and live music. For more information on these events and what is happening, you can visit www.northcountrynow.com for the schedule. The link should take you right to the calendar of events for Fourth of July in several St. Lawrence County locations.
The Antique Boat Museum's Posh Picnic will be July 3rd, with a perfect view of the fireworks display. When I was a kid, I went to a few of these and the food was always the best. However, I've always been partial to my Mom's potato salad this time of year, with BBQ ribs. Mmmm....hope your get together will be a blast.
Sackets Harbor has a chicken BBQ also on July 4, at Market Square Park. Contact Tim Scee at (315) 804-3161 if you need more info.
The Alexandria Bay Fire Department is holding its annual BBQ. For more information you can call (315) 482-2121.
Alson Clark Exhibit Opening
If you happen to be heading to the Alexandria Bay fireworks, think about going early and visit the Cornwall Brothers Museum and check out Alson Clark Art Exhibit opening the same day.
A very famous landscape artist, Alson Clark is known as an American impressionist.
He also painted murals for the Cathay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles and opened a studio in Watertown, NY in 1902. I had no idea we were the bedrock for so much talent in the United States.
Rock for the River
Save the River's Rock the River is not just a once in a lifetime event. It's a chance to hear some of the best artists making music you've never heard of. And that is a shame that should be remedied.
Jay Nash, who has roots on the St. Lawrence River, started this concert as a fundraiser for Save the River and when he asked several artists to join in his love for the river, they answered gladly.
Jay has had excellent success as a singer/songwriter, releasing several albums including the recent All the Stars in Copenhagen, and I believe has even recorded an album on Grindstone Island. Pretty cool. You can tell he enjoys playing this venue and it has a place close to his heart.
However, he isn't the only one that has local ties who will be performing. Eliza Moore is a well-known musician and song writer and if you have a chance to see her perform, whether solo or with Althea Jean, her voice is recognizable, clear and immaculate. Watch her possessed performance on a violin and you'll stomp your feet and ask her for more. I love to listen to her.
Joe Purdy's music has been featured on Grey's Anatomy (easy, girls...I know you love the show) as well as commercials, such as Kia, and probably one of my favorite YouTube performances with Pete Townsend of The Who. He really is a joy to watch perform in person.
The list of talent is long and amazing. Meiko, Chris Seefried, Garrison Starr, Joey Ryan, Monica Behan and the group performance jam at the end is spectacular!
For more information visit Save the River's website.
No matter what you're looking to do, remember to celebrate this great nation's day of independence. Just because it is raining, doesn't mean we forget what it means to be American. Happy Fourth!
