American Idol Recap May 4, 2012

By Craig Thornton

How many people does Jennifer Lopez have on her styling team? I picture her as Snow White and her beauty support team as at least seven, if not seventeen dwarves, busily working to keep their Diva the most beautiful fairy tale character of all time. Instead of going to the mines all day long they bustle around the wardrobe room, the green room, and the make-up room.  Last night’s show opening recap was a montage of the final five contestants performing and their showbiz makeovers.  Did Jennifer Lopez share her minions with the final five?  Did they get overtime?

Results started quickly and it was no surprise that Joshua was safe after the canonization the judges gave him the night before. “There are so few people who can perform that way,” J-Lo. “You got to be one of the top two idols of all time,” Steven Tyler.

“No matter what goes down, you’re one of the best singers ever on this show, and that’s a big feat.” Randy Dawg Jackson.

The Ford music video with its fairy tale theme was definitely one of the better ones of the season.  It had great costumes, was designed well, and didn’t feature the vehicle that much.

Next, Coldplay, one of my favorite bands, performed Paradise.  They sounded great.  Often live televised performances are compromised in some way, not this time. This time they sounded just as good, if not better than they do on the radio.  Coldplay is such a fantastic music group. They have made alternative mainstream.

Hollie and Phillip faced results next.  During the recap of their performances, Randy Jackson once again proved his lexicon is rich when he said, “I loved it Dude.”

Hollie was about six times better than Phillip Wednesday night.  So, how angry was I when Hollie was in the bottom two and not Phillip? Very!

American Idol’s most successful winner, Carrie Underwood, performed next.  I like Carrie, but lately she has become too prettified and glamorized.  She can still sing, but I feel her image makers are going overboard with an overzealous desire to make her sexy. The wind machine blowing her hair during last night’s performance was too much.  Really?

I think, by now, that everyone knows, I believe the greatest Idol Winner and contestant, for that matter is Kelly Clarkson.  She is the VOICE.

Even though the consensus seemed to be that Skylar was better than the untouchable Jessica, Skylar was relegated to the bottom two, with the clearly robbed Hollie.

Coldplay performed again and to use an overused word, were awesome.  Their second number actually had confetti.  I can’t image the cool Coldplay members saying, “Hey, let’s have confetti,” clearly this was an American Idol attempt at spectacle.  It was goofy.

“One of them is leaving the stage in just a moment.” Drama Queen Ryan Secrest utters for about $15 million a year.

 More stupid dialogue followed this:

Randy says, “Sang their faces office.” And “Dude” about six times.

Rewind and repeat. “The Top Five Has Never Been Better Than This.”

Skylar Lane is out of there.

I have to admit her swan song performance was electrifying, and she has a career ahead of her.  Let’s us not forget the story of Jennifer Hudson booted too early and Oscar winner for her film debut.  She rocks.

American idols is contrived and the winner is predetermined by the judges. They pick someone they would like to win and then attempt to influence the pubic to vote accordingly.
