And the nominees are....
And the nominees are:
The Golden Globes SAG Awards are behind us and now move forward to the grand daddy of them all, the OSCARS, which will air live on March 2nd.
The Oscar nominations came out on Thursday, January 16th.
As always there were surprises and snubs: For months Emma Thompson as PJ Travers (Saving Mr. Banks) and Tom Hanks as Captain Richard Phillips (Captain Phillips) seemed like locks or best actress and best actors. Both of them were left off of the Oscar nominee lists, instead the Academy appears to be smitten with American Hustle, as Emma Thompson was replaced by Amy Adams and Tom Hanks by Christian Bale in that film. American Hustle was also the only film to receive four acting nominations, one in each category. This bodes well for Jennifer Lawrence who recently won the Golden Globe for best supporting actress and is the only cast member to be nominated for all three: SAG, Golden Globes and Oscars. However, Lawrence did not win on Saturday night at the SAG awards, newcomer; Lupita Nyong’o (who was beyond stunning in her turquoise gown) took home the price. She and Lawrence now seem locked in a dead heat for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress
Many other films saw multiple acting nominations: 12 Years a Slave, Nebraska, Dallas Buyers Club, August: Osage County, The Wolf of Wall Street and Blue Jasmine. Although many are bemoaning the snubs of Hanks and Thompson, there were many other good performances by big names that were left out including Oprah Winfrey and Forrest Whittaker for Lee Daniels’ The Butler, (both received SAG nods) Octavia Spencer for Fruitvale Station and Robert Redford for All is Lost (Golden Globe nomination) and Idris Elba for Mandela: Long Walk of Freedom.
Though the performance you were rooting for may have missed the line-up, perhaps you should be happy that there are so many snubs, as that is a testament to the quality of work out there this year. Admittedly, I think the caliber of films and worthy performances are amazing this year.
