Local Authors Book Signing at Carthage Free Library
Carthage Free Library hosts local authors who specialize in the history of northern New York at a book signing on Thursday, May 31, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Authors Dave Shampine, Lynn Thornton and Janet Zando will sign copies of their books and offer books for sale.
David Shampine will feature his new book, New York’s North Country and the Civil War: soldiers, civilians and legacies. Mr. Shampine is the author of a number of books about the north country, beginning with, Remembering New York’s North Country: Tales of Time Gone By. This first effort was soon followed by, Colorful Characters of Northern New York: Northern Lights and The North Country Murder of Irene Izak.
Although battles did not take place in New York, New York’s North Country and the Civil War, tells stories of brave soldiers who fought in many major clashes, such as those of Jefferson County's Thirty-fifth New York Volunteer Regiment. Civilians also struggled for the cause in their own way, with many active Underground Railroad stops across the region. Mr. Shampine compiles his most fascinating columns from the Watertown Daily Times to chronicle the role that New York's North Country played in the Civil War.
Dave Shampine is originally from Carthage and still lives in Jefferson County.  He has been a reporter for the Watertown Daily Times since 1971 and has written his history column, "Times Gone By," for the past twelve years. He is also a contributing writer and copyeditor for the Bulletin of the Jefferson County Historical Society in Watertown and contributes to Inland Seas, the quarterly journal of the Great Lakes Historical Society.
