Cinema 10 Tonight - Melancholia

By Craig Thornton

Cinema 10 screens Melancholia on Monday, April 23 at the Roxy Theater in Potsdam.  Show time is 7:15 PM. This is the ninth screening of the spring Cinema 10 season.

I have seen three of Von Trier's films, Dogville (2003), Dancer in the Dark (2000) and the amazing Breaking the Waves (1996).

To say that you love a Von Trier film is a bit much, but to say that you wont' forget them is a totally acceptable statement.

Here is some more information on Melancholia:

Critically acclaimed and controversial director Lars Von Trier here commands an A-List cast including Kirsten Dunst as the new bride Justine, Charlotte Gainsbourg as her sister Claire and Kiefer Sutherland as Claire's husband John. The film consists of a prolog and two acts. The first act, Justine, depicts a family fulfilling or rebelling against proscribed roles during Justine's wedding reception at John and Claire's estate. One may wonder how the characters would behave if they were conscious of the strange planet on a collision course with Earth. The second act focuses on Claire's attempts to remain responsible and sensible as the planet looms on the horizon.  For her performance, Kirsten Dunst received the Best Actress Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. The Daily Telegraph writes, "[the film] comes close to being a tragi-comic opera about the end of the world. . . [and] is so beautifully rendered that the film cements the quality of fairy tale that its palatial setting suggests."

Mike LaSalle of The San Francisco Chronicle writes "As a woman suffering from a depression that she can mask but never shake, Kirsten Dunst is subtle and vivid, radiant and tormented, and impossible not to watch."

Melancholia is rated R for some graphic nudity, sexual content, and language. It runs 136 minutes and is in English.
