Cinema 10's sixth movie of the fortieth anniversary season is A Royal Affair.  Screen time is Monday, March 18 at 7:15 PM

Cinema 10 presents A Royal Affair on Monday, March 18 at the Roxy Theater in Potsdam.  Show time is 7:15 PM. This is the sixth film of the fortieth anniversary Cinema 10 season.

A Royal Affair is based on the true story of the late 18th century Danish enlightenment hero Johann Struensee, Queen Caroline Mathilda, and the obviously insane King Christian III.  This year's Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film portrays the three as entangled in a royal web consisting of an arranged marriage and an oppressive theocratic court of intrigue. A love triangle develops. The queen and the doctor embark upon romance and their own political intrigue as they plot to bring about such freethinking radical changes  as sanitation, a free press, an end to the slave trade in the Danish colonies, and the abolition of torture. In terms of historic accomplishment and human frailty the events of this movie resonate to this day. Stars Alicia Vikander, Mads Mikkelsen, and Mikkel Boe Følsgaard provide a remarkable depth to their characters. Leonard Maltin for Indiewire writes "If you think costume pictures have to be stiff, or stuffy, this film should dispel any such notions.""Because this story revolves, with a high degree of accuracy, around historical events not generally on the American curriculum, A Royal Affair enthralls where many historical dramas start to sag," states Mary Pol of Time magazine.
The events of the plot predate the works of Thomas Paine and the American Revolution. Director and co-writer Nikolaj Arcel wrote the screenplay for the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, screened by Cinema 10 in the fall of 2010.

A Royal Affair (En kongelig affære) is in Danish, English, German, and French with English subtitles. This movie runs 137 minutes and is rated R for sexual content and some violent images.

General Admission: $4.50/individual; $35/season tickets
