Grammy Award Winning Artist to Appear at JCC
Hip Hop Artist, Common, to Give Presentation at JCC on February 7
Jefferson Community College (JCC) will host a presentation entitled Finding the Greatness In You, by Grammy award winner Common on Friday, February 7, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in Sturtz Theater, McVean Student Center. Prior to the presentation, audience members will be treated to a mini performance by hip hop saxophonist Matt Corey. Corey received the Male Solo Artist of the Year Award for three consecutive years from the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities. Admission is free.
Common, a multi-talented rapper, actor and author, uses his fame to motivate and empower students across the country. The Chicago native received his first Grammy award in 2003 for best R&B song, Love of my Life, and since has received 10 more Grammys. He has 9 recorded albums, 2 produced in collaboration with hip hop recording artist Kanye West. The most current album, The Dreamer/The Believer was released in 2011. He holds 4 MTV video music awards. On the big screen, viewers can watch Common in popular movies Now You See Me (2013); The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012); Just Wright (2010); Date Night (2010); and Hell on Wheels broadcast on the cable TV channel American Movie Classics (AMC). Adding author to his repertoire in 2006, Common wrote his first children’s book titled “The Mirror and Me” followed by “I Like You But I Love Me” and in 2011, a book for adults titled “One Day It Will All Make Sense.”
Common’s commitment to inspire today’s youth is evident in the launch of the Common Ground Foundation, a Chicago based organization that enables youth to realize their full potential and learn about self-respect and love in an environment that fosters personal growth. In addition to the development of the Common Ground Foundation, Common has influenced a myriad of college students as a motivational speaker with engagements at institutions across the country including Arizona State University, Wright State University, University of Rochester, California University of Pennsylvania, University of Memphis, University of Alabama at Birmingham and Georgia State University.
