Dazzle your imagination with some international flair when the Jefferson Community College (JCC) Campus Activities Board kicks off its fall cultural arts series with An Evening of Dance on Friday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Sturtz Theater, McVean Student Center. Admission is free.

An Evening of Dance features classical Indian dancer, Bharati Jayanthi, and Russian folk ensemble, Barynya.

At the tender age of 8, Bharati Jayanthi began learning one of India’s most popular ancient classical dances, bharata natyam. Known for its grace and tenderness, bharata natyam is widely performed by female and male dancers. Songs, typically one of many Hindu mythological stories, are interpreted and conveyed by the dancer through a combination of face and hand gestures and sculpturesque poses. Jayanthi holds a master’s degree in fine arts from Bombay University.

Sounds of the Russian folk button accordion, Gypsy guitar and balalaika instruments will fill the theater when Russian folk ensemble, Barynya takes the stage. Audience members will learn a common word, or two, in Russian as they absorb the sights and sounds of songs and costumes of Russian, Cossack, Ukrainian, Jewish and Gypsy descent.
