Lake Ontario Playhouse Final Show

By Craig Thornton

SPANKY will do a one-man show for the final weekend of the Lake Ontario Playhouse

The Lake Ontario Playhouse, 103 W. Main St., has been providing professional entertainment to the Northern New York for over twenty-seven years, but this Friday and Saturday, Spanky will be performing the final shows at the Lake Ontario Playhouse.  National headlining comedian Spanky has over forty national television appearances and has also been featured in a dozens of films and was named “Comic of the Year” by Campus Magazine.   The stand-up comedian and performance artist is also an all-time favorite of the Playhouse and has been doing shows there since 1989 according to Producing Artistic Director Mike Kinnie.

The Lake Ontario Playhouse first opened up its doors with the Can Am Jazz Fest on June 14, 1987.  During its first two years of operation it was only opened in the summer months, bringing professional summer stock theatre to the region.  “I DO, I DO” was the first musical produced at the Playhouse and it opened on June 19, 1987 starring Watertown native Michael Bajjally and Shelly Drucker.  The production was directed by local native Rob Boulter.  Since that time, the Playhouse has produced hundreds of theatrical shows including TRUE WEST, THE NERD, GODSPELL, CHORUS LINE, CABARET, CHICAGO, I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT… NOW CHANGE, and an annual holiday family musical THE LITTLEST ELF, which was written and directed by Mr. Kinnie.

In addition to theatre the Playhouse also produced jazz shows, rock festivals, theatre camps, art shows, public forums, and stand-up comedy shows. The Playhouse began presenting stand-up comedy shows on a weekly basis in 1989 and some of the comedians that performed at the Playhouse included TONIGHT SHOW host and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE alum Jimmy Fallon, movie and television stars Kevin James and Martin Lawrence, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE performers Jim Bruer and Darryl Hammond, Wanda Sykes, Lisa Lampanelli and Spanky, and “dozens of other not so famous, but equally as funny comedians” according to Mr. Kinnie.

Community involvement has also been an important aspect of the Playhouse and the venue has housed numerous other events including the Sackets Harbor Central School musicals, community concerts, visits from Santa Claus, and benefits for many charities.  The Playhouse has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society in its annual “Comics Against Cancer” and also has presented benefits over the past few years for the Urban Mission.

“We asked Spanky to come in and do a final weekend of performances because he has been performing here almost since we started and is a local favorite.  We filled the summer season with a lot of our other favorites including: Sky Sands, Mick Lazinksi, Max Dolcelli, Richie Byrne, Eddie Clark, Mike Stankiewicz, Mark Ricadonna, Tom Anzalone, Mike Eagan, Vanessa Hollingshead and many more.  Spanky and I have a tradition of doing improv after his regular act is over and we plan on doing it again this last weekend both nights.  We want to go out with a bang!  And lots of laughs!”

The shows will be this Friday and Saturday (8/29 & 8/30/14) at 8:30 with the doors opening up at 6:30 pm.  Seating is limited and tickets are just $15, or $13 for military and local volunteer fire fighters and emergency responders. “We thank the community for all the support it has given us over the years!”

After this weekend's final performances with Spanky the Lake Ontario Playhouse will be auctioning off its contents, decorations, and equipment (tables, chairs, etc) on Monday, September 1, 2014 at 10 am according to Producing Artistic Director Michael R. Kinnie.
