I posed some questions to Jay Nash about his musical career and influences:

How did growing up in Upstate New York influence your musical development, if at all?

I mentioned this recently in another conversation...I really think that where you spend your formative years will tend to influence and inform the art that you make. Specifically for me, growing up in Upstate NY, I always had the since that I was fortunate to experience an even keeled upbringing, but at the same time, this is a place where a teen struck with wanderlust is bound to want to escape. That phenomena definitely found its way into my music. The paradox is that that this also a place that you want and need to return to...and that influence has proven to be a strong and recurrent theme in my music as well.

While growing up and percolating as a musical artist who was your greatest influence?

I am going to have to say, though this may come as a surprise to many...Jerry Garcia. There is something about his melodic sense and expressiveness that is almost existentially connective for me. Seeking that sense of connection has been a big driving force in my desire to make music.

What performing/recording artists working today do you listen to and admire?

I enjoy Bon Iver, Wilco, Sara Watkins and many others... All of which create beautiful,   yet truly original music.  I love hearing something that is new, authentic and honest.

Going forward are there any musical formats or genres that you are interested in working with that you haven’t tried already?

I hardly even know which genre it is that I fall under, but I hope to be led my creative instinct. my heart and whatever story that I am compelled to tell. If that leads me into new sonic territories, I am happy to go there.

What advice can you give to aspiring musicians living in upstate New York?

1.Surround yourself with people that inspire you and (2.) tell the truth. (In life, business and music.)
