Upcoming Rust Dyeing Workshop

By Craig Thornton

Visual artist Virginia Burnett of Winthrop, NY is teaching “Dyeing with Ice and Rust” on Saturday, August 9 at 10:00 am at SLC Arts. Students will explore two hands-on methods to dye fabric: rust dyeing on a small silk scarf and ice dyeing to add color to fabric.

Rust dyeing involves wrapping oxidized metal objects in fabric which results in coppery brown imprints becoming embedded in the fibers.  In ice dyeing, specially prepared fabric is covered with ice chips which are then sprinkled with dye powder and allowed to melt. The migration of dye powder onto the fabric creates beautiful color variations. These dyeing processes take time, so while the class is only an hour and a half long, dyed items must be left overnight to work their magic so students should return the following day to pick their items up.

Cost is $22 which includes the silk fabric, with discounted rates available for SLC Arts members or those in need of financial assistance. Students will need to bring some basic supplies like rubber gloves; they should request a supply list when registering. Class will meet in room 229, Downtown Snell Hall, 41 Elm St. Pre-registration through SLC Arts is required: 315-265-6860,
