Child Trauma Expert To Speak In Watertown


A well known expert in the field of child trauma will be in Watertown next Monday thanks to an event offered by the Children's Home of Jefferson County.

Arthur Becker-Weidman, Ph.D., will present 'Attachment-Facilitating Parenting' on January 7 at 7 p.m. in the Sturtz Theater at Jefferson Community College.

The event is open to the public.

An adoptive parent of a 14-year-old boy, Dr. Becker-Weidman will describe the pervasive and dramatic effects of chronic early maltreatment on child development and its implications for effective parenting.

Parents and professionals will learn about some of the principles of therapeutic parenting skills used to assist healing these hurt children.

The first half of the presentation will focus on the principles of trauma informed treatment, the components and phases of treatment, and a case discussion/demonstration.

The second half of the program will include the effects of trauma on child development and the principles of effective parenting.
