Friday: 2nd BCT Could Be Deployed Again In 2012
Fort Drum will not have all of its soldiers back on post in 2012 for as long as it thought.
The 2nd Brigade Combat Team is planning for a possible deployment in mid-2012. While it's not an official deployment order, the brigade's command, soldiers and families have been notified of the possible deployment.
"Last spring we thought we would have a 'full nest' for a little while at least," said Julie Cupernall, a Fort Drum public affairs official.
"It looks like, right now the 2nd Brigade has planing guidelines to deploy in mid-2012. So while we still think there may be a full nest, we're not sure how long it will be for."
The base will have its three combat brigades, aviation brigade, sustainment brigade and headquarters until the 2nd BCT deploys that year. That is the most soldiers and families the area has ever accomodated at one time, which is expected to create a housing shortage.
At 'full nest,' some 19,000 soldiers are expected at Fort Drum. With their families, that total rises to 35,000.
Cupernall spoke on "Public Eye."
"Public Eye," a public affairs program hosted by 7 News This Morning anchor Jeff Cole, will tackle the housing crunch in segment airing tonight at 9:30 on WPBS TV. (A repeat can be seen at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.)
