Morning Checkup: Making Patients More Comfortable

Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown has made a couple changes designed to help patients feel more comfortable.

The hospital is extending visiting hours to 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Also, the hospital is allowing a "patient care partner", such a friend or family member, to stay with a patient overnight.

The practice was previously confined to the pediatrics and maternity departments.

Karen Abare, RN, of SMC's intensive care unit, said both measures are nationwide trends that help keep the family more involved in a patient's care, which increases the quality of care.
