Thousands Expected For Clayton's Punkin Chunkin Festival

The 2nd Annual Punkin Chunkin Festival will be held on Saturday, October 19 in Clayton.

The festival is a one day event where do-it-yourself mechanical wizards of all ages attempt to launch pumpkins are far as possible with trebuchets, a siege engine used in the Middle Ages.

Competitors will compete in two categories of best overall design and which is the farthest throw for the height of the trebuchet.

Admission to the festival is free and activities begin at 9 am, with chunkin starting at 11 am and featuring competitive firings throughout the day.

The Clayton Chamber of Commerce will also host a non-sanctioned Kansas City-Style BBQ Contest featuring locals competing for bragging rights of the best BBQ in town. 

Five to ten teams of local grillers will face off on Riverside Drive with the challenge of coming up with an award-winning sauce, rub or secret recipe.

Competitors will vie for a trophy and bragging rights for the best pulled pork, best barbeque chicken and the People's Choice Award. 

New this year will be a whole hog contest.

The People's Taste Test will begin at 11:30 until all is gone. 

Festival-goers can purchase pork and chicken samples from each of the teams as well as two side dishes. 

Proceeds will benefit local nonprofit organizations.
