What To Do If You Find Injured Or Baby Animals

What should you do when you come across an animal that appears to be injured or abandoned by its mother.

It depends.

Local veterinarian Dr. Shannon Vicario appeared on 7 News at Noon on Friday to discuss human intervention.

She said if an animal is obviously injured, it should be brought to the attention of a wildlife rehabilitator.

Veterinarians at the North Country Animal Health Center on Route 3 often take care of injured animals.

However, Vicario said people should leave baby animals alone even if it appears they have been abandoned.

She said parents will often leave their babies to fend off predators or search for food.

Birds watch over their offspring from a distance while the babies learn to fly.
