3 Super-veggies for a Quick Beauty Boost!
Some of us switch up our lipstick shade more often than our diet. While we may go from nude to coral or berry to fuchsia in just a matter of weeks, when it comes to salad, we always stick with romaine.
But Susan Bowerman, a registered dietitian and assistant director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, says that when people get into eating ruts they risk more than boredom: They may also be depriving themselves of essential nutrients that can boost both health and beauty.
Every fruit and vegetable contains slightly different phytonutrients. To get the full balance, you should be eating a wide variety of different colors every day. If you haven't been doing this, here are three new "shades" of food to try now:
1. Blood oranges. The deep red flesh of the citrus fruit most loved by vampires comes from anthocyanin. This hard-working antioxidant not only helps protect your heart and eyes, it also has anti-inflammatory and collagen-building properties that keep your skin looking its best.
2. Seaweed. Seaweed is an alphabet soup of vitamins and minerals: It's loaded with vitamins A, C, E, K and B, as well as iodine, selenium, calcium and iron. Packed with fiber, seaweed can help control your appetite, and some animal studies even suggest that it can help you burn more body fat. Look for sheets of seaweed on supermarket shelves and use them for wraps (instead of bread), or crumble them into salads, stir-fries and scrambled eggs.
3. Kohlrabi. This member of the cabbage family looks like a humungous Brussels sprout that might have been grown on Mars. But what kohlrabi lacks in beauty, it makes up for in health benefits. Both the purple and green varieties are super-low in calories and rich in minerals, vitamins and phytochemicals. Incredibly versatile, kohlrabi can be eaten raw, roasted, steamed, stir-fried, barbecued and even made into home fries.
