Are you an apple or a pear?
Over the years, various studies have linked apple-shaped bodies,, those heavier in the middle, with a variety of health concerns.
Now, a new study adds kidney disease to the list.
Using data from 3-hundred-15 average weight participants...researchers in the Netherlands looked for links between waist-to-hip ratio, which tracks where your weight is distributed.... and kidney function.
Higher waist-to-hip ratios were associated with lower function, lower blood flow, and higher blood pressure in the kidneys.
Translated: healthy weight yet apple-shaped people appeared to be putting stress on their kidneys...which could lead to kidney disease later in life.
The underlying mechanisms for why the heavier middle matters are not well understood...but the researchers say even those at a healthy weight may benefit from blood pressure lowering treatments.
