If you're a big fan of those all-you-can-eat buffets...listen up.
The size of your plate, and how quickly you dive in matters. Thirty trained observers followed 303 diners at 22 different all-you-can-eat Chinese
buffets in the Spring of 2008.
Those who served themselves the minute they got there...without scoping out the entire buffet...loaded up on more high calorie foods and made more trips than those who surveyed all of their options first.
The diners who used larger plates also took larger portions than those who picked smaller plates.
Interestingly... the type of seating facing towards or away from the buffet had no statistical significance in the food overload. Neither did choice of utensils forks versus chopsticks
The takeaway? Restaurants could help patrons by offering smaller plates...and putting them in a spot that forces a full trip around the buffet, before busting out the bad choices.
