Patients with Type 2 diabetes often accumulate dangerous fat deposits around their vital organs. Diet modification and medication are prescribed to try to control the problem.
Now, there's news that moderate-intensity exercise can help target that troublesome fat.even when there's no change in a patient's daily menu.
Researchers in the Netherlands tracked the effects of exercise on organ-specific fat accumulation and heart function in a small group of patients with diabetes.
Each had an MRI before...and six months after starting an exercise program. All of the participants worked out for at least 3 and a half hours a week.
Although cardiac function was not affected, the exercise program led to a significant decrease in fat in the abdomen, liver and around the heart.... all of which are associated with increased cardiovascular risk.
The researchers say in the future they hope to use advanced imaging to predict which treatments may be most effective for individual patients with diabetes diet, medication, exercise, surgery or specific combinations.
