Story Updated: Jun 11, 2013

The South Jefferson backpack program provides 70 kids with food for the weekend.

They're children who are eligible for free and reduced-price school lunches. The backpack program was started to make sure these students are able to eat on weekends, too.

Now, the organizers want to expand to other schools.

Nearly 47.4 percent of Jefferson County's 18,884 students receive free or reduced-price lunches. The national average is 20 percent.
