Boy Scout Spreads Word About Healthy Diet To Earn Badge

Story Updated: Jun 6, 2013

Brendan McCormick is a First Class Boy Scout who is working on getting his Communications Merit Badge.

In order to do that, he had to speak with a local media outlet about a topic that's important to him.

He chose to speak to 7 News about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

"I think that people should eat healthy and be fit. At least exercise every day," he said.

McCormick knows how to practice what he preaches.

He says he exercises regularly and his lunch is filled with healthy snacks and sandwiches on whole wheat bread.

"It's healthier and it's better than white bread," said.

Brendan's mom has been encouraging her son and the family to eat healthy for years.

She recently lost 100 pounds.

"Pulled on some heart strings that he decided to write about health because it made me feel like I really made an impact on him and the family," said Kayla McCormick.

Before Brendan can get his badge, he has to plan a court of honor, which is an award ceremony.

He should find out if he earned the badge this summer.

I'm very proud of my grandson - and my daughter - for their commitment to a better eating regimen. It's difficult to balance hectic lives with good nutrition, but the whole family makes an effort. I so happy that Brendan is in Boy Scouts and learning so many useful life skills.
