Exercise Programs Designed For Seniors

Story Updated: Mar 6, 2014

"Silver Sneakers" and "Silver and Fit" are low-impact exercise programs designed for seniors and both are offered at the Watertown YMCA.

Cathy Kasulke wants to keep moving and stay active and says the Y's workouts for people over 60 help her to do just that.

"A lot of range of motions, exercise with weights to increase your muscle power," said Kasulke.

Silver Sneakers which is chair aerobics.

Silver and Fit is a bit more intense.

"There's a cardiovascular component and a strength component," said Michelle Graham, YMCA wellness director.

While all Y members can take the class, some seniors may have insurance that will help pay.

Silver Sneakers is connected with United Healthways and Silver and Fit is connected with Excellus Blue Cross.

If you're not a Y member and want to give one of these classes a try, you can pay an $8 walk-on fee.

For more information on either of these programs, call the Y at 782-3100 or log on to watertownymca.org.
